The current price of Turkish White Poppy Seed is USD 2750 FOB
Please be informed that the Indian Government has lifted the 20 months old ban on Turkish White Poppy Seeds imports into India. This time the quota for the year 2016 Crop fixed at about 18500 tons and one importer can import not more than 90 tons, which means only about 210 companies can be allowed but the number of applicants close to 500 companies therefore the Indian Authorities had to go for controversial Draw of lots procedure which was challenged in the Indian Courts by many importers.
From March 1st, 2018 to 31st March 2018, about 8820 tons has been shipped from Turkey to India from which 6570 tons (about 74.5%) has been brokered thru Abdul Haq’s Turkey Dalal Company. This is the biggest exports ever recorded in a single month in the history of Turkish White Poppy Seeds. Not to forget that the Turkish exporters, traders, stockiest and farmers have been holding huge quantity of Turkish White Poppy Seeds for 20 long months since July 2016. After shipping out such a big volume the most of them are relaxed while many had to book their loss early on.
It is a big surprise to Turkish side that even after shipping out 50% of the cargo still the prices are not moving upwards, in fact it never crossed the price of USD 2900 FOB. One of the reason that the prices not moving upwards is the devaluation of Turkish currency since the year 2017, continue to slide weaker and weaker while the main reason is that most of the traditional, regular, potential and financially strong Indian importers had not got their luck in Draw of lot while allotting the import permit. Therefore, they are not participating in the current trade. The absence of these traditional buyers not supporting the Turkish market, had they got import permit then the Turkish and Indian markets could have been much more active by now for sure because there is strong demand for Turkish White Poppy Seeds from India due to the vacuum created during the last 20 months of the ban on Turkish White Poppy Seeds.
These frustrated traditional Turkish White Poppy Seeds importers are pressing hard at the Indian Government authorities to issue fresh permits for the year 2017 Crop without further delay which is about 11000 tons available and ready to be shipped. The Indian Government has no reason now to stop or delay the New Import Permit for Turkish White Poppy Seeds as there is no court case pending now.
In India, the traditional Turkish White Poppy Seeds importers are not happy because until couple of years ago there were only 15 companies engaged in imports of Turkish White Poppy Seeds and now due to unfair restriction of 90 tons per company, hundreds of new companies been incorporated just to apply for the import permit and to increase the chances in draw of lots. The applicants for Turkish White Poppy Seeds is around 500 companies, many of these never imported nor traded White Poppy Seeds, such companies now trying to sell their import permit locally at a huge premium to the traditional importers which is causing damage to the fair-trade practices.
On the other hand, Turkish Exporters, Stockiest, and Traders are selling their goods one way and not daring to replace their goods because of the bitter experience they had with India in the recent past and they fear because of the absence of buying from the Traditional Indian importers owing to the Draw of lot procedure which will not support the market to move upwards while 11000 tons of 2017 Crop and New crop 2018 approaching in July.
As I pointed out on my report on 04th October 2017, Turkish exporters are desperate to sell their cargoes that turned out to be true because even after selling 50% of the cargo no one wants to hold the cargo now and price never increased since then.

Haq added: “Turkish traders are desperate to sell their cargoes and get out but they are not getting any opening this time. Somehow these rumors and some little buying keep the market active,” Haq added.
However, the second exporter challenged this point, stating: “Why should they be desperate? It is the Indians who need the goods and are desperate. If anybody on the Turkish market needs cash, they can sell one or two truckloads even at midnight and get their money immediately – but we don’t see any exporters, traders or stockiest selling – on the contrary, active buying is going on, as proven by the steady price increase.”
